Classic postcards
This series of postcards (16.5 x12.5cm.) painted in oil arose from the deep esteem I feel for the great classical painters. I was at a time in my life when I was very clear that I wanted to paint but I didn’t know where to go. The artistic trends of the time were undoubtedly abstract painting, but I was very excited to be in front of a Velázquez, a Rembrandt, a Vermeer,… Wanting to copy them has allowed me to get closer, even if only a little, to each of them.
The process was beautiful, especially with Velázquez, with whom I am in love. At first glance it seems that it paints for the subject but when you get closer to it you find that it is an abstract painting; it was the painting that the baton carried, rather than the portrait he was making. I think the same of Rembrandt and Goya. I was captivated by Vermeer’s serenity in the stroke of the painting, and in the themes it deals with, with a very particular light. I love Raffaello’s pure and cheerful colors that he uses in the fabrics of his clothes. And when you think they made the colors themselves, it’s even more impressive. And it is that, in addition, they paint the human condition so well that this alone makes them eternal.
